Biography of Freedom Fighter Late Shri Santram Sharma
Born in 1910 in a poor Brahmin family in Himachal Pradesh, Pandit Santram Sharma dedicated his life to India’s freedom struggle. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi at the age of 18, he joined the movement, leaving his family and village behind. An active Congress worker, he promoted Khadi, served at Gandhi Ashram Meerut, and participated in several movements. He faced multiple imprisonments, enduring hardships, including losing an eye in jail.
Post-independence, he championed Khadi promotion, established educational institutions, and worked with leaders like Gandhi, Nehru, and Vinoba Bhave. He also contributed to the Bhoodan movement, helping landless farmers in Uttarakhand. In 1956, Acharya Kriplani appointed him State Minister of Godhe Smarak Nidhi. Later, he founded ABM Educational Trust, establishing a CBSE school providing affordable education.
Shri Sharma passed away in 1995, leaving a legacy of selfless service. Annual programs honor his contributions, and environmental initiatives continue his vision. His Smruti Sachvatika preserves rare medicinal plants, and plans are underway to unveil his statue.
